Today we have a a sandwich on flat bread cut into triangles, some pasta salad, a couple of homemade mini muffins and the ever popular checkered apple. For more great lunch ideas go to: What's for Lunch Wednesday
Hi Krista! That is so sweet! Yes the apple is freehand. Basically using a serrated knife cut a checker board pattern in the apple slice only cutting just below the skin. Then use a small paring knife to remove every other square creating a checkerboard! It actually doesn't take that long and my kids get such a kick out of them!
My son looked over the bento submissions today and has requested I make yours for him! How do you do the checkered apple? Is it freehand?

Thanks for the tip! It did not take long at all, I think he'll be thrilled to find them in his lunch box today.
